"Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion,
for God loves a cheerful giver."
-2 Corinthians 9:7
What is Tithe?
What is Stewardship?
Tithe vs. Offering
What does it mean to tithe?
Tithing is giving 10% of your income. God gave us the principle in the Old Testament:
" 'Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house.
Test me in this,' says the Lord Almighty, 'and see if I will not throw open the
floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that there will not be room
enough to store it. I will prevent pests from devouring your crops, and the
vines in your fields will not drop their fruit before it is ripe,' says the Lord
Almighty. 'Then all the nations will call you blessed, for yours will be a
delightful land,' says the Lord Almighty. "
- Malachi 3:10-12
When we give according to God's standard we are saying, "God, I believe that everything I have is a gift from You, and I trust You with all that I have." When you tithe, you are expressing faith that God will continue to provide for you, and the good news is, He will:
" Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken
together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure
you use, it will be measured to you. ”
- Luke 6:38
Why Should I Tithe?
Giving to God is not just a donation, it is recognizing that God has given to us first and everything is His.
We give because He owns everything and He first gave to us. When we give to God through the local church, we give Him our very best, not our leftovers, and we help to support His calling in our local community.
" The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it,
the world, and all who live in it; "
- Psalms 24:1
" Then Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine. He was priest of God Most High, and he blessed Abram, saying,
'Blessed be Abram by God Most High, Creator of heaven and earth. And praise be to God Most High, who delivered your enemies into your hand.' Then Abram gave him a tenth of everything.' "
- Genesis 14:18-20
What does it mean to be a good steward?
A steward is one who manages some one else's household. This is especially appropriate for us as Christians because we believe everything we have is a gift from God. Christian stewardship is compared to sowing and reaping a crop:
" Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever
sows generously will also reap generously. Each of you should give what you
have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for
God loves a cheerful giver. "
- 2 Corinthians 9:6-7
The stewardship of our finances should be done with a cheerful attitude. Our giving should be done through the local church on a regular basis:
" Now about the collection for the Lord’s people: Do what I told the Galatian
churches to do. On the first day of every week, each one of you should set
aside a sum of money in keeping with your income, saving it up, so that when
I come no collections will have to be made. "
- 1 Corinthians 16:1-2
What is the difference between tithe and offering?
The Bible also teaches us about the idea of "the offering". Our offering any monetary gift we give over and above the tithe that God asks of us already.
" Honor the Lord with your wealth, with the first fruits of all your crops;
then your barns will be filled to overflowing, and your vats will brim over with new wine. "
" Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. Whoever sows to please their flesh, from the flesh will reap destruction; whoever sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life. Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers. "
